The march forward toward a reorganization of Wayne County moves on. The Erie County Committee to Reorganize Wayne County Boundries has filed with the Michigan State Board of Canvassars as a non-profit political committee to support a ballot iniative and further action to hold Wayne County more responsible and more representative of the tax base and population base of the region. Outcounty Wayne County represents 76% of the taxes paid to Wayne County, contains 50% of the residents, and is represented on the County Commissioners by 40% of the commissioners seats. County Commissioners represent approximately 133,000 residents. Heading up the effort is Leonard Mannusau of Brownstown and Norm Chinavare of Rockwood. The plan is to spend the next 5-7 months organizing, planning and preparing for a petition drive to change the State Constitution County Boundries Act, which allows for changes in county boundries. The petition drive would seek to lower the amount of signatures needed to change county boundries from 247,000 to 10,000 or 10% or the residents of the affected county or counties. This would allow counties, such as Wayne, to be re-apportioned or two lower population counties to join together to cut governmental costs. The committee is seeking voluteers to work on committees, as well as funding, professional services and legislative representation for these efforts.
