Reasons for Reorganization
Many citizens feel that there is a lack of fiscal responsibility in Wayne
County Government.
With the elimination of Detroit Recorder's Court, Wayne County Circuit
court will be overburdened with cases and both civil and criminal trials will be
backed up 1-3 years.
Many citizens feel that there is an unfair tax burden on the various areas
of the county.
For example, in the Southern Half of Wayne County, approximately 23% of
Wayne County's taxes are collected. In the western part of the county,
approximately 45% of Wayne County's taxes are collected. In the cities of
Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park, approximately 24% are collected. Finally,
in the Northeast Section of Wayne County, 8% of the taxes are collected.
Citizens of Wayne County are under represented in county government. The
county commission is made of 15 members, 9 of which are based out of Detroit, 3
from Western Wayne County and 3 from Southern Wayne County
These areas are largely represented in the following graphic.
