Report 4/22/05:
Detroit River:The
river was slow during the period of April 14-17. Jiggers for the
most part struggled the most but I did get a good report from a
jigger in front of Great Lakes Steel who caught many smaller fish
mostly under 3 lbs. The best handlining bite I was aware of was
on the Grosse Isle side of the Trenton channel below the free
bridge. Again not many fish but they were much larger.
West Basin: Michigan waters of Lake Erie are
closed again this year to walleye fishing until June 1st. Jigging
the reefs in Ohio waters north of the Davis Besse nuclear plant
is producing limit catches of walleye but you will mostly find
eaters under 3 lbs. Ohio walleye limits are 3 fish per person
through the end of April after which becomes 6 fish. Ohio now has
the same 15" size limit as Michigan. I fished the deeper
waters off of the reefs looking for bigger fish during April
14-17. There are many big hungry walleye between "B"
and "C" cans and north. We experienced very dirty water
conditions resulting from the stiff east winds during the
previous week that really made catching these fish tough. Once
the weather settles a bit this ought to be an excellent bite for
some big fish. Unfortunately this weekend does not look like an
inviting time to be out persuing those 'eyes but as soon as the
water and weather provide for some better conditions the deeper
waters north of the reefs should be dynomite!
Welcome back
to the 2005 Lake Erie West Basin fishing reports. Yes I am going
to try this again for 2005. My work and personal situation is not
as good as it once was but things have settled down some and I do
plan on making this West Basin Walleye Report page work. I will
need help this year from you Detroit River guys as I am out of
town most of the time and cannot personally scout anywhere I do
not fish namely the Detroit River. Thank you all for providing
the latest information on what is going on in the river and lake.
