Report 6/14/04:
Huron River: I received a report of a 25 inch, 10lb Flathead catfish caught at Huroc Park on Saturday 6/12 on a leech with a split shot. River fisherman are also taking 15" to 18" smallmouth bass in the backwaters on worms and bobber rigs.
West Basin: Since about last Tuesday conditions have been darn near unfishable. Water is dirty all the way past West Sister and I hear all the way to Kelly's Island. Boats fishing north of West Sister on Sunday caught fish but had to work hard to do so. Fish are running a little bigger toward West Sister. In Michigan waters the area in front of Fermi is loaded with fish based on fish graph echos. Boats fishing in this area on Sunday caught more fish than those around West Sister but the Fermi fish are smaller. The water in front of Fermi appears to be the clearest currently available. Generally, crawlers on bottom bouncers was the most successfull technique Sunday.

Report 6/11/04:
West Basin: My work responsibilities have kept me off of the water so I am counting on reports provided by all of you who visit this page. The best report I have received this week came on Tuesday from West Sister but the location was not any more specific. This report had a five person limit running gold wiggle warts 200-220 ft back. No speed was mentioned.
I have many reports of poor water conditions on our side (Michigan side) of the basin. It is my guess the most recent rains and wind have only degraded the situation. There are fish off of Fermi but water conditions are poor, if you are able to make the trip to West Sister this weekend it sounds like the best prospect.

Report 5/30/04:
Detroit River:Not much to report from the river but did talk to two guys who fished the Trenton Channel yesterday and caught two walleye
West Basin: I finally have my boat in the water so expect reports much more frequently. Walleye action is still limited to Ohio with the best action coming from the 'A' can south of West Sister and from the waters just outside of Michigan between Michgan waters and the Maume channel. The most active fish are west of Sputnik to about 1.5 miles west and south one mile. I have been running crawler harnesses on 3oz bottom bouncers 30 ft back trolling 1.5 to 1.8 mph. Blues and purples working best. Easy multi-limit catches on the 29th, wind made fishing much tougher on the 30th but still caught eight. Fish running from 16" to 25".

Report 5/18/04:Detroit River:No new infomation on the River.
West Basin: Best reports are coming from just east of the Maume shipping channel between the Toledo Light and the Sputnik. Most effective is a troll slow, .8 - 1.5 MPH. Crank baits and crawlers both doing well.

Report 5/9/04:

Detroit River:Sorry for the lack of reports but this has not been a great year to report on. The past 10 days in the river have improved with jiggers and handiners both doing well. When trolling baits blues and greens are the best colors. Jiggers are doing best with baits tipped with shiners. Mostly just eaters are biting. Fishing has picked up all over the river but the best report I have received is for the Ambassador Bridge and north.
West Basin: I don't even know if this counts as the west basin for the audience I believe views this fishing reports page but the best thing I have is from Marblehead. Marblehead, Ohio for those who don't immediately recognize the spot. Michigan waters are closed and I have not been able to fish the Ohio waters close to Michigan so this is the best I can report. I understand fishing 'eyes in Marblehead has been hot!

Report 4/20/04:

Detroit River:The river has been slow the past weekend. The MWT held a tournament and only 24% of the participants recorded 5 fish for two fisherman during each of the two days of fishing! Best fishing in the river seems to have come from the Canadian side, the Trenton Channel scored a second. The upper river on the American side was very slow.
As many of you readers of this web page know we held a club tournament as well this weekend. Results were similar to the pros. I do not know of anyone in the club fishing the Canadian side. Second and third place in the club tournament were caught in the Trenton Channel.
West Basin: Michigan waters are closed to walleye right now but one team including yours truly fished the Ohio side of the border. Jigging shallow for smaller fish was very slow. The troll bite was not hot but we found big fish around 'B' can. We managed to record 31.4 lbs for 5 fish in this area which would have been the second best weight recorded for all those fisherman in the MWT tournament. When working the lake troll very slow, >1.0 MPH. Our best bait was Reef Runners Deep Rippers in various colors but Bubble Gum, Irridescent, and Red Hot Tiger were our most successful colors.

Report 4/14/04:
Welcome back to the 2004 Lake Erie West Basin fishing reports. My personal work schedule has me far behind were I usually am in preparation for the fishing season but I have received some reports from both the lake as well as the river. Fishing regulations regarding walleye have changed dramatically from last season for Michigan, Ohio and Ontario. Enough has been printed about these changes so I will not repeat it here. If you are not up on the latest fishing regulations for the area you fish please review them before you head to your favorite fishing spot.
Detroit River: It seems to be a little past prime time in the Trenton Channel but fish are still being caught. Best areas seem to be up river in Wyandotte to the Ambassador bridge. The traditional spots around BASF, Mud Island and the Steel plant are producing the best. The Canadian side is quite dirty. Like last year, the jig bite is producing better than handlining.
Lake Erie: Walleye on the Michigan side of the lake south of Bolles Harbor to Luna Pier was great before the MICHIGAN SEASON CLOSED FOR WALLEYE IN THE LAKE ON APRIL 1st! You can still find good walleye fishing on the Ohio side of the border trolling shallow running crank baits in 10 to 18 foot of water or jigging around Turtle Island. Ohio limit in April is 3 fish. There are also new regulations for treble hooks in Ohio in April so check them out before you go fishing. 10+lb fish are being taken from both the West Basin as well as the river!
